What made 2006 notable

New York belonged to an outsider. Marilson Gomes dos Santos broke clear at mile 19 and held off the favourites to win in 2:09:58, becoming the first South American to take the New York City Marathon. The Brazilian beat defending champion Paul Tergat, Hendrick Ramaala, Olympic champion Stefano Baldini and Meb Keflezighi, a result few had forecast. Stephen Kiogora of Kenya was second and Tergat third, eight and twelve seconds back. Jelena Prokopcuka of Latvia controlled the women's race to win in 2:25:05, with Tetyana Hladyr second and Catherine Ndereba third. A total of 37,936 runners finished, 25,607 men and 12,329 women, on Sunday 5 November.
