What made 2007 notable

Paula Radcliffe announced her return in New York. Racing her first marathon since the birth of her daughter Isla earlier in 2007, she traded surges with Gete Wami through Central Park, retook the lead inside the final 800 metres and held on to win in 2:23:09, just 22 seconds clear. Jelena Prokopcuka took third. The men's race belonged to Martin Lel, whose 2:09:04 made him the first man to win London and New York in the same year, with Abderrahim Goumri second and Hendrick Ramaala third. A total of 38,557 runners finished, 26,042 men and 12,515 women, one of the largest fields the race had hosted to that point.
