What made 2011 notable

Geoffrey Mutai's record run was the story. The Kenyan covered the five-borough course in 2:05:06, demolishing Tesfaye Jifar's decade-old 2:07:43 mark by more than two and a half minutes on a cool, sunny morning, and banked a 70,000 dollar course-record bonus. It capped the year he had also clocked 2:03:02 at Boston, the fastest marathon ever run to that point. Emmanuel Mutai and Tsegaye Kebede also beat the old record. The women's race delivered its own drama: Firehiwot Dado, written off for most of the day, reeled in London champion Mary Keitany in the final mile to win in 2:23:15, four seconds ahead of Bronx-based Buzunesh Deba. A then-record 47,107 runners entered.
