What made 2010 notable

Haile Gebrselassie was the story. The world record holder and pre-race favourite slowed and stopped around mile 16 near the Queensboro Bridge with a knee that had been drained of fluid a day earlier, then announced at the finish area that he was retiring from competition, a decision he reversed within days. In his absence Gebre Gebremariam of Ethiopia won on his marathon debut in 2:08:14, ahead of Emmanuel Mutai. Edna Kiplagat took the women's race in 2:28:20, with American Shalane Flanagan second in 2:28:40 in her own debut. Meb Keflezighi was the leading American man, sixth in 2:11:38. NYRR recorded 44,704 finishers from a record 45,344 entrants, run on a crisp, cool day near 10 C.
