What made 2013 notable

This was New York's comeback. After Hurricane Sandy forced the 2012 race to be cancelled, the 2013 ING New York City Marathon returned and became the largest marathon in history at the time, with 50,266 finishers. The story was as much about turnout as racing. To absorb deferred 2012 entrants, NYRR kept the non-guaranteed drawing small, more than 33,000 applicants chasing only about 4,500 spots over a one-month window from 24 April to 24 May. On a cool, windy day near 46 F, Geoffrey Mutai defended his title in 2:08:24, and Priscah Jeptoo won the women's race in 2:25:07 to seal the World Marathon Majors series crown. Security was heightened after the Boston bombing that April.
