Context

What made 2014 notable

The wind made the story. New York set a record as the largest marathon ever with 50,564 finishers, yet a cold northerly gust off the Verrazano bridge blew away the first mile marker and shredded the lead pace. Wilson Kipsang abandoned his course-record plan and ground out a 2:10:59 win, the slowest in New York since 1995. Mary Keitany defended in spirit too, winning in 2:25:07 by just three seconds over Jemima Sumgong, matching the closest women's finish on record. NYRR drew 9,170 runners from 77,087 non-guaranteed applications, around 12 percent, out of more than 134,000 total applications. Katherine Slingluff of Brooklyn crossed as the race's one-millionth finisher.
