What made 2019 notable

Joyciline Jepkosgei announced herself over the full distance for the first time, beating four time champion Mary Keitany to win on her marathon debut in 2:22:38, the youngest women's winner in nearly two decades. Geoffrey Kamworor pulled clear in the final miles to take his second men's title in 2:08:13. Conditions were close to perfect, cool and dry at around 45 F at the Verrazzano start. Behind the elites, the lottery had been brutal: NYRR logged a record 117,709 applications and selected just 10,510 through the drawing. By the finish line in Central Park, 53,627 runners from 141 countries had crossed, making this the largest marathon ever run at the time.
