Tokyo Marathon 2026 Results: Takele and Kosgei Win

Tadese Takele retained the Tokyo Marathon title on March 1, 2026, winning in 2:03:37, and Brigid Kosgei took the women's race in 2:14:29, a course record and an Asian all-comers record. A preliminary 38,773 runners started the 19th edition, the largest field in the race's history at the time.

Who won the 2026 Tokyo Marathon?

Takele became only the second man to win Tokyo in consecutive years, holding off Geofry Toroitich Kipchumba, who was given the same official time of 2:03:37. Alexander Mutiso finished third in 2:03:38, one second covering the podium. Kosgei's women's race was the opposite kind of contest: she broke clear before 35km and ran 2:14:29, taking more than a minute off Sutume Asefa Kebede's 2:15:55 from 2024.

Was it a course record day?

For the women, yes. Kosgei's 2:14:29 is the Tokyo course record and also stood as an Asian all-comers record. The men's course record remains Benson Kipruto's 2:02:16 from 2024.

How warm was it?

Warmer than Tokyo runners expect. Race morning started near 7 degrees Celsius under partly cloudy skies and climbed toward 17, warm enough that organizers issued a heat advisory and pushed hydration messaging at the back of the field. How many people ran?

A preliminary 38,773 starters, up from 37,480 entrants in 2025. Tokyo has grown its field in every recent edition and expands again to 40,000 for the 20th anniversary race in 2027. Ballot dates, acceptance rates and the full field breakdown for that cycle are on the 2026 ballot results page.

What did the 2026 lottery look like?

The general entry window for that race ran August 15 to 29, 2025, with results notified September 19, 2025. The Foundation again published an acceptance rate of roughly 10% without releasing raw application counts. The equivalent window for the 2027 race opens August 14 and closes August 28, 2026.
