Tokyo Marathon Corrals: Proof of Time and Wave Rules
Starting corral placement at the Tokyo Marathon shapes your entire race morning in front of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku. With 40,000 runners entering the race, race organizers rely on declared finish times and verified documentation to manage the start.
Unlike some major marathons where participants can freely drop back to run together, Tokyo enforces strict policies regarding starting corrals and wave procedures. Here is how Tokyo Marathon corrals are assigned, who must provide proof of time, and the rules governing race morning.
Who must submit proof of time for Tokyo corrals?
Official entry guidelines require proof of time only for faster entrants. If you declare an estimated marathon finish time of 3:00:00 or faster at the time of entry, you must upload an official record or finisher certificate verifying a qualifying performance achieved between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2026.
Qualifying performances must meet one of the following standards:
- Full Marathon: Within 3:00:00
- Half Marathon: Within 1:25:00
For a full marathon, a finisher certificate or official record that includes an official split time at the half marathon mark is also accepted. If you submit multiple records, organizers only use the most recently submitted certificate for verification.
What records and file formats are accepted?
To verify a qualifying performance, Tokyo Marathon accepts official finisher certificates or race results documents. A screenshot or digital image of race result records is acceptable. However, data recorded solely by personal GPS watches, running apps, or similar devices is not accepted.
Courses do not need to be certified by the Japan Association of Athletics Federations (JAAF) to qualify for corral placement. Uploaded files must be in JPEG or PDF format, with a maximum file size of 10 MB.
If you fail to submit required proof documents, or if race officials detect deficiencies, falsifications, or fraudulent entries, you risk being reassigned to start from a rear corral.
How are runners without past race results assigned?
For runners targeting times slower than 3:00:00 or entering their first 42.195 km race, submitting an official certificate is not required. Tokyo Marathon FAQ guidance instructs first-time marathoners to enter an estimated finish time based on their running ability during entry registration.
Can you change your starting corral or entry gate?
No. Tokyo Marathon Entry Regulation 16 states that entry gates and starting corrals cannot be requested for change for any reasons, and no exceptions are accepted.
Can you start in a different corral to run with a friend?
At many major marathons, faster runners are permitted to move backward to join friends in later corrals. At Tokyo, that is strictly prohibited.
According to official Tokyo Marathon race rules, every participant must start from their designated corral and wave. Organizers explicitly state that runners may not start with someone assigned to a different corral or wave. Starting from an unassigned corral or wave can result in disqualification.
The wheelchair marathon begins at 9:05 a.m. JST, followed by the marathon start at 9:10 a.m. JST.
