What made 2014 notable

The 2014 race is the day the marathon world record fell under 2:03 for the first time. Cool, clear conditions near 8 degrees Celsius set up the pancake-flat Berlin course for history, and Dennis Kimetto delivered, running 2:02:57 to take 26 seconds off Wilson Kipsang's mark from the same race a year earlier. Runner-up Emmanuel Mutai also broke the old record in 2:03:13. In the women's race Tirfi Tsegaye of Ethiopia won in 2:20:18, with Shalane Flanagan third in 2:21:14, then the second-fastest American woman ever. For ballot applicants, 2014 cemented Berlin's status as the fastest, most record-friendly Major.
