The 2006 Flora London Marathon, the 26th running, belonged to Deena Kastor. On a cool, damp, drizzly Sunday she ran 2:19:36 to become the first American woman under 2 hours 20 minutes, setting an American record that still stood years later and ranking fourth fastest of any woman to that point. Lyudmila Petrova was second in a Russian record 2:21:29. In the men's race Kenya's Felix Limo edged compatriot Martin Lel by two seconds, 2:06:39 to 2:06:41, with seven men inside 2:08. David Weir won the wheelchair race in a course-record 1:29:48, the first ever finish under 1:30, and Francesca Porcellato took the women's wheelchair title. 32,924 runners finished.
