The 2023 TCS London Marathon returned to its traditional April slot after three successive autumn editions, with a then record 49,272 starters, more than any previous London. Ballot results had landed on Monday 24 October 2022 to more than 410,000 entrants. Race day, 23 April, was cool and overcast around 11 degrees, with rain arriving during the mass event under heavy cloud and high humidity. Kelvin Kiptum of Kenya stunned the field on his London debut, surging clear to a course record of 2:01:25, then the second fastest marathon ever run. Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands won a dramatic women's race in 2:18:33, recovering after stopping mid-race with apparent hip trouble to overhaul the leaders in the final stretch.
