Meb Keflezighi made history. He surged clear of four-time Boston champion Robert Cheruiyot in the 23rd mile and held on to win in 2:09:15, becoming the first American man to win in New York since Alberto Salazar in 1982. Cheruiyot was second by 41 seconds, Jaouad Gharib third and Ryan Hall fourth. Derartu Tulu added her own first, outkicking Ludmila Petrova in the final mile to win in 2:28:52 as the first Ethiopian woman to take the title, with Paula Radcliffe fading to fourth. The day carried a second record: 43,660 finishers made it the first marathon ever to pass 40,000. Conditions were cool with 14 mph winds.
