What made 2016 notable

New York staged the biggest marathon the world had ever seen. NYRR reported 51,388 finishers from 51,995 starters across 124 countries, eclipsing the previous record set by the 2014 edition. The racing matched the scale. Ghirmay Ghebreslassie of Eritrea broke clear to win in 2:07:51, becoming at 20 the youngest champion in race history and the first Eritrean to take any Marathon Major. Mary Keitany made it three New York titles in a row, winning the women's race in 2:24:26 by more than three minutes over Sally Kipyego, with American debutante Molly Huddle third. Conditions were cool and breezy, around 57 F with scattered clouds at the Verrazzano start.
