Shalane Flanagan delivered the defining American distance moment of the year, breaking clear in Central Park to become the first US woman to win New York in 40 years, since Miki Gorman in 1977, finishing in 2:26:53 over a minute ahead of Mary Keitany. The men's race went the other way for the favourite: Geoffrey Kamworor held off Wilson Kipsang by three seconds in 2:10:53 for his first NYC title. Conditions were cool and blustery, around 55 F at the Verrazzano start. Behind the elites, NYRR drew 16,211 runners through the entry lottery from 98,247 applications, roughly 17 percent of drawing applicants, and a record 50,643 runners finished across the five boroughs.
