The Boston Marathon does not have a ballot. Why do so many people search for a Boston Marathon ballot?

Is there any Boston Marathon lottery for 2027?
Yes, but only for runners who already ran a qualifying time. The BAA's new Boston Qualifier Selection takes applicants who beat their age group standard but finished outside the cutoff, and randomly draws approximately 1,000 of them for additional bibs. Entry is automatic, with no separate application, and the draw ignores how narrowly you missed, so a runner one second outside the cutoff has the same chance as one a minute outside. What qualifying time do you need for Boston 2027?
The 2027 standards are 2:55:00 for men aged 18 to 34 and 3:25:00 for women aged 18 to 34, easing at each older age band out to 4:50:00 and 5:20:00 for runners 80 and over, based on age on race day, Monday, April 19, 2027. Does a qualifying time guarantee entry?
No, and this is the part the ballot question usually hides. A qualifying time earns an application, not a bib. When more qualified runners apply than the roughly 30,000 person field can hold, the BAA accepts the fastest applicants first and the slowest accepted time becomes the cutoff. When does 2027 Boston Marathon registration open?
Qualifier registration runs Monday, September 14 to Friday, September 18, 2026, closing at 5:00 p.m. ET on the final day. It is not first come, first served, so applying on day one changes nothing about your chances. What matters is that the window is five days long and easy to miss.
How do you get into Boston without qualifying?
Two routes. Official charity partners sell fundraising places, with each charity setting its own minimum and running its own application process on its own timeline, generally opening well before race day and filling fast for the best known causes.
