Berlin Marathon Time Limit: Cutoffs and Course Rules
The official time limit for the BMW Berlin Marathon is 6 hours and 15 minutes, measured from crossing the start line. In addition to the overall net limit, organizers enforce intermediate clock-time cutoffs at Kilometer 33 and Kilometer 38.
Participants who do not reach the intermediate checkpoints before the specified clock times must leave the official route. Here is how the cutoff system works, what happens if you miss a checkpoint, and the rules for Saturday's inline skaters.
What is the official time limit for runners?
SCC Events defines the time limit for runners as 6:15 hours from crossing the start line. Timekeeping is measured by crossing the timing mat at the start and finish. Because runners start in waves, your personal 6:15 clock begins when you cross the starting mat.
Timekeeping is done exclusively with the MIKA TAG, a transponder attached to the back of your bib number. In order to guarantee timekeeping, the transponder must not be bent.
Intermediate cutoff checkpoints and clock times
Along the marathon course, organizers enforce two fixed afternoon cutoff checkpoints:
- Kilometer 33: Must be reached by 3:50 pm.
- Kilometer 38: Must be reached by 4:35 pm.
Participants who have not reached Kilometer 33 by 3:50 pm or Kilometer 38 by 4:35 pm must leave the official route. Runners who cross the start line in later waves have less elapsed clock time before these afternoon deadlines arrive.
What happens if you miss a cutoff?
If you do not reach Kilometer 33 or Kilometer 38 by the specified times, event rules require that you leave the official route and continue on the footpath or be taken to the finish by bus.
If you must leave the official course or board the bus:
- You will not receive a result time.
- You will not receive a medal.
- You will not receive a post-finish supply.
For spectators following your progress via timing splits along the route, see our guide on how to track a runner at the Berlin Marathon.
What are the cutoffs for inline skaters?
Inline skaters compete on Saturday, September 26, 2026, under separate time limits and checkpoint rules. The time limit for inline skaters is 2:10 hours from crossing the start line.
The cut-off point is at 3:10 pm at the Victory Column. Until 3:10 pm, skaters have their last chance to take the circuit lap towards Ernst-Reuter-Platz and reach the finish line within the time limit. All skaters who arrive at the Victory Column after 3:10 pm will be diverted toward the finish line, regardless of the number of laps completed up to that point. Skaters who have not skated the full marathon distance can cross the Brandenburg Gate and the finish line, but will not appear in the rankings.
Refreshments and hydration gear rules
Only specific hydration gear is permitted on the course:
- Hydration packs or vests with a back compartment holding a maximum volume of 3 liters for hydration bladders.
- Front pockets for water bottles holding a maximum of 0.5 liters each.
- Front pockets for small items such as a cell phone or keys.
- Drinking belts with pockets for water bottles holding a maximum of 0.5 liters each.
Refill stations are located at all aid stations at the last table of the water supply. Water stations are positioned along the course at KM 5, 12, 17.5, 22.5, 27.5, 32.5, 34.5, 38, and 40. Fruit, tea, water, and Maurten Drink Mix 160 are offered at KM 9, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 36, with Maurten Gel 100 available at KM 27.5.
Before heading to Tiergarten on race morning, remember that bib pickup takes place exclusively at Tempelhof Airport from Thursday, September 24 to Saturday, September 26. Review our Berlin Marathon bib pickup guide for hours and required documents.
