NYC Marathon Cancellation and Deferral: Deadline and 2027 Entry

If you hold a place in the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon on Sunday, November 1 and cannot run, today is the last day to act. New York Road Runners says the deadline to cancel online is 11:59 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 31. Cancellations and deferrals are also accepted in person at the TCS New York City Marathon Expo presented by New Balance, which runs October 29 to 31, 2026.

How do you cancel online?

Log in to your NYRR account, open your 2026 TCS New York City Marathon registration in the "Your Events" tab of your dashboard, choose "Cancel Registration" from the "Registration options" menu, and follow the steps. All marathon fees are nonrefundable, and once you cancel you cannot reenter this year's race.

Do you get a 2027 place?

For general entry runners, yes, with conditions. If you cancel in a given year and did not cancel the previous year, you are eligible for guaranteed entry the following year. The place is not automatic: you must claim it and pay the entry fee during the application window. NYRR's note on 2025 cancellations shows how this works in practice: those runners had to claim and pay from February 4 to 25, 2026, and entries not claimed in the window were forfeited. NYRR has not yet published the 2027 claim window on this page.

You cannot chain deferrals. Runners who got guaranteed 2026 entry because they canceled in 2025 cannot cancel again in 2026 and become eligible for guaranteed entry in 2027.

Charity, tour operator and team entries

  • Official Charity Partner runners: contact your charity for its cancellation rules. Charity entrants who meet their fundraising requirement may be eligible for guaranteed entry the following year.
  • International Tour Operator runners: contact your tour operator. Canceled tour operator entrants do not receive guaranteed entry to the following year's race.
  • Team for Kids and Team for Climate runners: you can cancel and receive guaranteed entry the following year by emailing your team, but the fundraising pledge must still be met by the original deadline. It cannot be deferred.
  • Athletes with Disabilities: the same online and expo deadlines apply. Canceling a Duo Team Exhibition entry does not guarantee a Duo Team place the following year.
