Didn't Get Into the Tokyo Marathon 2027? Your Options

Tokyo Marathon 2027 General Entry results land on September 18, 2026, and with a published acceptance rate of roughly 10%, about 9 in 10 applicants will get a no. There is no lottery appeal and rejections do not carry over to next year. The good news: the autumn is the busiest ballot season of the Majors calendar, and the 2028 Tokyo cycle starts sooner than most runners think.

Can you still get into Tokyo 2027?

Realistically, no. Every published route has closed by results day. The charity donation window ran June 24 to July 9, 2026, the Semi-Elite RUN as ONE and ONE TOKYO GLOBAL member windows closed August 13, and the general lottery closed August 28. Tokyo publishes no later entry route, so a September rejection ends the 2027 chapter. The route-by-route detail is in how to enter the Tokyo Marathon.

Which Major ballots open next?

The calendar works in your favor. Expected and confirmed windows after Tokyo results day:

  • Sydney 2027: the ballot is expected to run late September to mid October 2026, following the pattern of the last cycle. Sydney published the friendliest odds of any Major ballot, around 33% last time. Dates are not yet confirmed by the organizer.
  • Berlin 2027 and Chicago 2027: both lotteries ran through the autumn last cycle, with windows expected after their 2026 races on September 27 and October 11.
  • New York 2027: the lottery is expected in February 2027.

How do you get into Tokyo 2028?

The 2027 cycle mapped the calendar for you. Four doors, in the order they open:

  • Charity: late June, a roughly two-week donation window through RUN with HEART. The 2027 window was June 24 to July 9. It is the most expensive route and the most reliable one, covered in Tokyo Marathon charity entry.
  • ONE TOKYO GLOBAL membership: the member-only draw ran July 31 to August 13 for 2027, two weeks ahead of the general lottery, from a pool of about 8,095 members rather than hundreds of thousands of applicants. The math is in ONE TOKYO GLOBAL: a second route into Tokyo.
  • Semi-Elite RUN as ONE: bypasses the lottery entirely for runners with a qualifying time. Test a personal best against the standards in the qualification checker.
  • General Entry: mid August, the door most people use and the one with 10% odds.

Does re-entering every year actually work?

The odds compound, slowly. At 10% a year, four consecutive applications give roughly a 34% cumulative chance and seven give about 52%. Stacking the member draw and the virtual run series draw on top improves the math meaningfully. The ballot simulator runs the numbers for any combination of attempts, and the Tokyo Marathon page tracks every window in the cycle.
